1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
Not hugely certain. Um...managed to make an electron microscope give me results?
2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I still have a giant bottom- so I am continuing to resolve to not eat ALL THE THINGS.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?4. Did anyone close to you die?
No one close. [ LJ User: mhw ] died, but he wasn’t very close.
5. What countries did you visit?
Only British holidays. Rob and I utterly fail at having enough time to leave the country. So, if Scotland counts- it’s the only other country I went to.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Some brilliance and some results. Experiments that work. My supervisor’s approval. *reaches for the stars*
7. What date from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
31st March. It will be the date I remember for the next few years. I have to write my end of year report by that date, and I always make myself ill over deadlines. I am already bricking myself over this time next year. *whimper*
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Getting fucking neurons to grow in culture. Being able to make acute tissue slices that actually get described as ’beautiful’. Getting shit which shows up under the electron microscope.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Oh fuck. This whole thing is so much harder than I thought it would be, and I am honestly not sure that I’m up to it. In some ways, the whole fucking year has been a failure.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Enough wisdom tooth infections that I had to have the damn thing removed. And then a dry socket. I suspect I had a few other bits, but nothing huge. I am a sickly creature, but I am hardly ever proper sick.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Not sure. My Frightfest Pass? I had an amazing time there. Um- a copy of Endnote? Endnote is the shit. I should have listened to my supervisor in my final year and got myself a copy of it. Would have saved me a bucket of time.
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Obviously, Rob. He is wonderful, the best thing ever, and I love him. One of the post docs that I work with- we shall call him ’V’, for that is his initial. He knows EVERYTHING. He can do EVERYTHING. He is allergic to being bought drinks, and keeps buying them for everything else. He also goes ”Want to go for coffee?” when I am about to explode with irritation at anyone. He is just unbelievably lovely and I couldn’t have done this year without him. I will weep many salty tears when he leaves in February.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
Tories. Dislike. REALLY dislike.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Just frittered, mostly. This is aside from the chunks that go to Rob for Freya upkeep, the chunk that goes to savings. The rest- I buy lunch, drinks, silly shizzle. Weirdly, whenever I buy anything expensive, I feel guilty. Like I haven’t got enough results to spend my stipend.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
When I first saw vesicles under an electron microscope, I did a lap of the fucking building.
16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Rainbow Connection. I have been singing the entire Green Album since they released it on NPR.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
Sadder, I think. But I was pretty damn happy last year. I don’t feel bad. I’d say I’m pretty neutral, really.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Fatter. I think. Just. Living with a chocoholic is hell on the old waistline. I am actually fat enough that I am considering going on a diet. I may even count calories.
iii. richer or poorer?
Richer in real terms, poorer in accessible cash terms. Being payed every quarter is a bitch.
18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Reading science. Writing science. Seeing people. As you can probably tell, I have been an awful friend to pretty much everyone this year. There is no room in my brain for anything other than my PhD. Everything else is just me killing time and using absolutely no mental energy.
19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Reading Fanfic. I really need to quit it. It’s bad for me.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Was at the Grandparents in Scotland. My parents, sister and grandparents- lots of delicious foods. (Partridges! Tiny strawberry santas!)It’s been pretty peaceful, which was nice.
21. Did you fall in love in 2011?
*squishes the Rob*
22. How many one-night stands?
None! And if I had, this wouldn’t be how I’d break it to Rob. :D
23. What was your favorite TV program?
’Once Upon A Time’ has grown on me- it was a bit pants to start with, but is now utterly compelling. Dexter has been dubious. Grimm started better and got worse. Castle remains amazing.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Who on earth would I hate? I haven’t enough time and mental energy for all the people I like, let alone anyone else.
25. What was the best book you read?
How To Be A Woman by Caitlin Moran. Would recommend it. I do not know anyone who hasn’t, to an extent, gone ”THIS DESCRIBES MY LIFE!”.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Not sure I discovered new things so much, but I love Sam Roberts a whole lot more than I did, and also Rilo Kiley and Alkaline Trio. #hipster
27. What did you want and get?
Not certain. I haven’t had time to want anything- I have been to busy being incredibly lucky with my life, and just being.
28. What did you want and not get?
An easy life. Lots of results and things working straight away. DATA. PLEASE, LORD, GIVE ME DATA!
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
I’ve really liked ’Thor’, as it was ADORABLE. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil was the greatest from Frightfest, but there was another one- I think it was called ’Detention’ that was so amazing I want to show it to everyone.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I was 25. [ LJ User: titanic days ], [ LJ User: aegeus ], [ LJ User: kay taylor ], [ LJ User: morganmuffle ], [ LJ User: radinden ]and I went to [9]Vinopolis, where we drinked a lot of drinks. It was fun, even if our little notebooks largely said ”This wine has top notes of ASS with a vinegary aftertaste.”
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
DATA. Things working. I want things to work.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2011?
Jeans, t-shirt and cardigans. Looking like a right scruffy git, as usual.
33. What kept you sane?
Not having time to be insane. Lots of cuddles from Rob.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Victoria Coren. I want her in my pants.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I do not agree with the Tories one little bit. Not a sausage I don’t.
36. Who did you miss?
Everyone. My Leeds Peeps, my parents, all you guys. :D
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I get on better with the people at work, and that’s lovely. :D The new American that we brought were amazing.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011:
”When all else fails, read the instructions.”
