 Meme of the Year 2017

1. What did you do in 2017 that you'd never done before?

I led meetings, I lead a working group. It’s great fun, and I actually like doing meetings and getting things sorted and done. I want to be a grown up when I grow up!

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I mean, my eating wasn’t great, and I wasn’t that healthy. I did tend to get stuff done though, and keep moving. That was great.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? 4. Did anyone close to you die?
No one died! And though we’re not close anymore, my friend Hannah gave birth to a tiny squish, and I am so happy for her.

5. What countries did you visit?

France and Scotland. We’re not being big into travelling for the sake of having completely different country

6. What would you like to have in 2018 that you lacked in 2017?

The main thing that sucks about a weekly commute is that I don’t get the ‘just-being-together’ time in the evenings with Rob, which means that there never feels like there’s enough time together, so I want to spend maximum time with him, which means that I don’t feel like I have enough time to see anything else. I’d really like more time with Rob and more time with chumrades and family. We’re sort of compromising, with Rob taking a job abroad, meaning we should get more quality time together, and more friends and family time in-between times.

7. What date from 2017 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

30th of September! My sister got married! Rob and I don’t plan to, so this was a big deal for the family. It was a really beautiful day, and loads of parts of it were layered with significance and thoughtful touches. My sister looked gorgeous, and I was so moved I nearly cried as she walked down the aisle.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

I did a lot of things- I kept stretching myself, I dressed like a grown-up, I tried to be more of a grown-up at work. I think it’s working, and I’m quite proud of how I’m doing.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I’ve been really bad at self-control. I didn’t exercise, or manage to stop myself eating ALL THE THINGS. This is definitely something I want to work on. I am just running chronically low on people energy, and thus I do not want to be around people for the time it takes to cook, so I snack furiously. Must do better!

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Relatively little. A cold or two, and also my uterus is the worst and I would not like it.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

My iPad is super awesome, and I also have a lovely lapsytopsy that I love. Also, the Amazon Prime subscription is great.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Rob is the best. Like, actually the best. I am so glad I tricked him into going out with me. Best plan ever. His parents are actually really helpful too.

Special mentions go to Ally, for living her best life. Also Emerson, who has had a bit of a surprising year!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

EURGH. *glowers at the news* Everyone. Behave.

14. Where did most of your money go?

It mostly went on rent, tickets home, and also, there was quite a chunk spent on my laptop. Some went towards my sister’s wedding.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Nine Worlds, and doing our panels at it. (I had a great time doing the ‘Dumbledore: Good or Evil’ panel, less fun doing the “Promiscuous Unicorns” bisexuality panel.) I was super excited to go on holiday with Rob, and for Christmas, because I really just wanted a break.

16. What song will always remind you of 2017?

Hmmmm! Probably ‘Occidentali’s Karma’ from Eurovision. (Italy wuz robbed!) I haven’t listened to quite so much music this year, because I haven’t been home to hear Rob’s latest obsessions quite so much.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?

I’m fairly content, but I’m running really low on energy. I am nearly constantly around people, so I’m less excited about socialising, and less inclined to do it. So, probably less happy, but not much less?

ii. thinner or fatter?

About the same- which at least isn’t too much worse?

iii. richer or poorer?

Richer- I mean, my income exceeds my expenditure, which is good! :)

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Creating rather than consuming. I’ve got very much into the habit of playing stupid games on the tablet, and that never helps the mental state, and just eats time.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Travel across London. Playing stupid games. I mean, I don’t want to stop, but I also totally shouldn’t.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

I spent Christmas with Rob’s parents, which was nice and peaceful. Good food and a sleepy go though the King William College Quiz.

21. Did you fall in love in 2017?

Ten years with Rob!

22. What was the best thing you made?

I filmed and edited a video, and I was really proud of how it turned out. It didn’t look terrible and I think it was very helpful. I didn’t finish much knitting. :(

23. What was your favorite TV program?

I enjoyed ‘Mindhunter’, ‘Stranger Things’ was really good. But oh, my love, my heart: Steven Universe. It’s so cute and shiny and rainbow coloured. It’s PERFECT.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I mean, hate’s a very strong word. I have one person who I have no time for now, but I had some affection for last year. Also one person I HATE, ARRRRRRGH.

25. What was the best book you read?

I read ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, which was distressingly good. It’s the main one I remember reading, but it wasn’t exactly. A discovery.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Haven’t really discovered any music this year. I’ve discovered PODCASTS. Oh yes. I love the ’S’Laughter’ podcast, because it’s about murder, but it’s also actual facts adorable and I love it.

27. What did you want and get?

Everything! I’m massively spoiled and also pretty in to delayed gratification. I got pretty much everything that I wanted in the world. Oh, also the general election result gave me life.

28. What did you want and not get?

To live with Rob. I mean, this was something that I didn’t take many steps towards this year, but largely because I was trying to figure out what I wanted from my career.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?

Wonder Woman made me SO HAPPY. Like, it could easily have been really exploitative, but it wasn’t. It was just an action film where the hero was a woman, and that just was the greatest thing that there has ever been.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

I was 31 this year. I’m reasonably certain that I was in Oxford with Rob. He had a quiz tournament, so I tagged along for the Pierre Victoire and to waddle around some museums whilst he did that. It was great.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Living with Rob.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?

Clarks and Marks and Spencers. I have been trying to Dress Like A Grown Up, which has involved trying not to wear jeans and hoodies at work, and has resulted in a lot of stripey tops, and my cardigans getting dragged back into service.

33. What kept you sane?

Having the PhD students to chat to at work. They are neeeeeeerds, so we can talk neeeeeeeeeerd stuffs.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Gal Gadot was a highly lovely Wonder Woman and does seem utterly luminous. Tom Scott continues to make me heart-eyes.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

Hahahahahahahahahaaaaaaa! Remember when this question actually called for an answer, rather than just a hand wave at the world in general and the rise of far right extremism and a “take your pick?”.

36. Who did you miss?

Rob, my parents, my grand parents, even my sister. I wish I got to see Mikey more. Also, I miss my housemate Jon, because the place has never been so well run since he left.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

I got better friends with a chap from work, and have thus met a few new people through him. They are the neeeeeeeerds, who fully understand that seeing a movie and just ‘liking it’ is NOT HOW IT’S DONE.

Also, I met Emerson for the first time, which was a pleasure.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2017:

I’ve known that it’s all a game, and to get on you just have to play the game. I’ve been playing the game this year, and am a) enjoying it, which is weird, and b) realising anew how important that is.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
“I have friends, I totally have friends, friends, friends, friends, I have all the friends!”

-Crazy ex-girlfriend.

I was wondering yesterday whether you'd do this again, and whether I should go back and look at LJ to find out!

I have Nine Worlds in my diary so barring disasters hopefully we'll actually see each other this year.

I haven't deleted my LJ but I haven't been back to it all year. Eventually I'll delete it too.

Yes! A coffee or a drink and I'm going to try and actually be in the right hotel this year so I don't have to traipse back & forth.
