Meme of the Year 2013
Dec. 21st, 2013 09:22 pm1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I knitted things! I learned to knit this year and am actually mad addicted to it.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Yes! Actually! I lost over a stone. I want to lose another one, but it’s not my priority. I resolve to get my thesis finished. If I don’t do it, all will be incredibly tragic.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?4. Did anyone close to you die?
No, fortunately.
5. What countries did you visit?
France (Pas-De-Calais, with parents to visit my sister), Belgium (Brussels), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam) – both with Rob. Action packed weekends of joy.
6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
This year has actually been a pretty ok year. I’m fairly positive and happy with everything I have and don’t have. More time is always required, but I’m happy.
7. What date from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
Nothing much. Am still sad that I wasn’t in the north for the death of Margaret Thatcher. The South East doesn’t get it.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Am afraid my answer is the same as last year. I got to the end of this year, and I am still in with a chance of getting a PhD.
9. What was your biggest failure?
My various obsessions. I love doing everything that I’m not supposed to much more than what I’m supposed to- be that watching films, reading fanfic, playing stupid games, knitting, crocheting, socialising. So I spent too long doing that.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Few colds. Nothing much that’s bad.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Not much. I haven’t bought a lot and I haven’t really appreciated material things very much this year. It’s all about the people!
12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Rob should take his usual bow at this point for care and feeding of a Freya, as I get more and more difficult to deal with as I get closer to the end of my PhD.
Without a shadow of a doubt, my supervisor fits into this category. We’ve had our ups and downs and it’s been difficult, but he got me here. If I ever get a PhD it will be something I know I couldn’t have done if he hadn’t dragged me through it by my teeth. Good man. Frequently insulting, but good man.
Also, my friend M. who also gets his shoulder cried onto/ranted at far too frequently.
13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
*glares in direction of the government and also capitalism*
14. Where did most of your money go?
Most of my money is in my savings, a good portion went to Christmas gifts, some went on a tablet earlier in the year, some went on a bus ticket.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Going to Brussels with Rob, going to see Mean Girls Quote-Along, and pretty much every break from work I’ve had.
16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
I’ve been chirruping away to all sorts of things. Rob got big in to Lorde, so I’ve been cat-singing ‘Royals’ a lot. I periodically get Miley Cyrus’ songs stuck in my head. All the big songs you’d expect, really.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder?
I’m pretty positive. I’m getting more and more selfish, I have less to give to most people, but really, I feel pretty good about life at the moment.
ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner! Woot! I’m still fat, but I’m at a fat Freya weight, not a ‘too fat to be a Freya’ weight.
iii. richer or poorer?
Richer, but as I’m really hoping to stay out of my savings hopefully that will always be the way. I’m about the same cashwise. (Gonna be so poor this time next year.)
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Creating and maintaining an organised file system. You don’t understand how much that would have improved my life.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
I quit the stupid game I was playing last year after I couldn’t play it on my tablet, I’ve spent a lot of time knitting, but honestly, my usual time sinks are fairly well balanced with work. I have worked a lot! (I will always wish I’d procrastinated less.)
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I had it at my parent’s house. We had my sister and my paternal Grandparents there. It was pleasant. Too much people not enough house, but it was alright.
21. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Yes. (Still with Rob!)
22. How many one-night stands?
Not likely.
23. What was your favorite TV program?
Not watched a lot. Just got into ‘Atlantis’ because it is the most stupid, ridiculous, fanservicey, queer baiting, male centric, god awful thing in the world and I must watch it because I am a sheeple.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nah! I think you overestimate how much time I have to think about things which aren’t me.
25. What was the best book you read?
I managed to read ‘Russian Roulette’. So it was the only book I read. It was pretty bad. (I love Alex Rider anyway!)
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Been listening to musicals till my ears bleed. Also I love ‘Rhett and Link’. Those guys rock.
27. What did you want and get?
Tablet, I guess? I’m trying not to want things. I don’t have time to look for things to want!
28. What did you want and not get?
The year to go slowly. I kept waking up and going “HOW IS IT NOVEMBER? IT WAS MARCH TWO DAYS AGO?”
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Only thing I saw was ‘Iron Man 3’.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 27 and I went to the pub with some work people, and we played The Chairman’s game. We had to stop halfway through and make some people read the rules as I can’t pay attention long enough to enforce them consistently. But it was amazing!
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not trying to start experimenting again in the beginning of November. I was THERE with writing, and now I need to get there again.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
Hoodies, cartoonish t-shirts, jeans and vans. Scruffy git. Oh yeah.
33. What kept you sane?
Not really sane. But I’m happy, which is more important!
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I am strangely attracted to Rhett of Rhett and Link. Rose Ellen Dix (of Youtube fame) is hotttttt.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I hate this government. You don’t understand how much. And I hate the media which repeats its messages so blindly. AAAAAAAARGH. Stirred.
36. Who did you miss?
Sam, Liz, Ally, Chris and Meg, Richard, Hannah (both of them!), Simon, Alex and Lowell, and…pretty much everyone that I never get to see. PhDs are a hell of a drug, kids. They make you ignore everyone because the idea of organising anything is way too stressful.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I met Nicola, who is a person at work who is awesome and googles the smutty shit that we talk about so that we don’t have to. (She is responsible for half of the D: D: D: faces we make.)
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
“We won’t get far without our knitting pattern!” said my aunt. And it’s a truth universally acknowledged.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
