Meme of the Year 2018

1. What did you do in 2018 that you'd never done before?

I had surgery as an adult who was old enough to remember it!

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

Nah, I honestly just made it through this year one day at a time.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

No, no babies in the vicinity.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My maternal Grandad passed away on the 9thof December. He had dementia and had been fading for a long time, but he declined fairly quickly a few weeks before the end. It’s good that he’s at peace now.

5. What countries did you visit?

France and Scotland. Visiting Rob and my grandparents.

6. What would you like to have in 2019 that you lacked in 2018?

A feeling like I know and like where my life is going career-wise. I feel a little trapped and miffed with work, and I can’t see how Rob and I will end up in the same place again. DISLIKE. I want to stop feeling like that.

7. What date from 2018 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

I had surgery on the 5thof July. My grandad passed on the 9thof December.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

I held the fort at work with half the team gone. I changed the timetable at work and it’s worked. I got my Christmas knitting done.

9. What was your biggest failure?

I still lacked self control and ate too much. I eat my feelings and my feelings weren’t good this year.  I’m more withdrawn and don’t really people enough, but that’s not all my fault.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

I had labyrinthitis at Easter. Meanwhile, remember me saying my uterus was the worst? Turns out, it is the second worst. The actual worst was the dermoid cyst the size of a honeydew melon which had grown on my ovary. An enormous teratoma. The surgery was a bit traumatic and took quite a bit of recovering from. The removal of that and the insertion of a Mirena coil has helped a lot.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Probably my unicorn tears water bottle- that has got a surprising amount of use for the money I paid for it. I also got a couple of tote-bags from RedBubble which are nearly constantly in use. My Steven Universe and Hamilton crossover bag is awesome and makes me happy.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

Rob is still wonderful and has looked after me well this year. My parents have also been extra lovely.

Chumrade Stephen has passed his viva, so wheeee! Winning. My sister did really well in her exams too. ALL THE POINTS!

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

I cannot engage with the news. I can’t. It’s too stupid. Work has ended up being a bit of a trigger for a bad thought spiral, so that’s not good.

14. Where did most of your money go?

More than should have has been spent on cake and food. Most went on rent and train tickets and things though.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

Holidays and just having a break. This year, because of Rob’s health, my health and staffing issues at work, I have basically been doing endurance runs to when I could next take leave. I had no holiday, only sick leave till August, and then same to December. It was a fucking slog, so being able to take breaks was great.

OH! OH! OH! Infinity Wars. Much excite. Big terror.

16. What song will always remind you of 2018?

I don’t know for sure, but in November my sister made me watch ‘Coco’, which was a bit prescient what with my grandad passing just over a month later, but ‘Proud Corazon’ has been in my head and makes me weird melancholy happy.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

i. happier or sadder?

Sadder, I think. Especially right now.

ii. thinner or fatter?

Probably a touch fatter. Oh dear.

iii. richer or poorer?

I mean, I don’t have less money, but inflation is starting to bite. There’s a big storm coming and that scares me.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Seeing friends. It’s not all my fault, as my friends insist on having their own lives and doing their own thing with them, but I also don’t make as much effort as I should. I also should read more books as I don’t really have a fandom at the moment.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Merging Dragons. I won’t stop, but I should. (Well, I might, who knows?)

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

We had dinner with Rob’s parents and spent the rest of the day at home drinking hot beverages and being quiet. We’re both pretty knackered and peopled out.

21. Did you fall in love in 2018?

Eleven years with Rob!

22. What was the best thing you made?

I learned and quite love herringbone stitch, I also could learn to love entrelac.

23. What was your favorite TV program?

I’m currently binging through ‘Bones’ and it’s like delicious crack. I liked the start of Haunting of Hill House (I like the 1999 film ‘The Haunting’ because it is terrible, and the 1963 film, which was genuninely tense.), but the tail end of the series squandered the tension that it built up. Shame.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Nah, I still wish ill towards everyone who voted for Brexit.

25. What was the best book you read?

I really enjoyed “The Gate to Womens’ Country” by Sheri S Tepper, I also read a bunch of Jeeves and Wooster early in the year, and they were great fun.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

The Anastasia Musical was really good, and I also listened to a fair amount of 1990s rap, but it’s not been much of a musical year for me.

27. What did you want and get?

I wanted my periods to stop hurting, and they largely have. This is good. I also wanted Rob to feel better, and generally he does.

28. What did you want and not get?
To move jobs. I’ve tried a but have had two phenomenally frustrating rejections and I’m still a bit peeved about both of them.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?

Infinity Wars! It was everything you could hope for as a resolution of a 10 year mega-crossover event. I also enjoyed Venom. It was awful, but great fun.

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

This year I was 32. Rob took me to dinner and then we saw Hamilton. It was lovely. A++ would have another birthday.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

I kind of wish Rob and I could have been in the same country, but I’m happy for him that his job is great. I don’t know if it would have helped if I got either of the jobs, but I am pissy that I didn’t.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2017?

Generally work trousers and a jumper, palazzo pants and a t-shirt and then wooly leggings and a tunic. Comfort is the plan.

33. What kept you sane?

Being disengaged. The more I engage with anything, the worse the world gets.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

I quite love Contrapoints (Natalie Wynn), but generally it’s not a year of fancying anyone.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

The rise of fascism. Like, guys, could you just fucking not?

36. Who did you miss?

My family, especially my grandad at the end of the year. I also missed Ally, who was perpetually upside-down and Mikey who is just a busy person.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

I dunno? Like, I don’t know what new people I met? All my new demonstrators are good, my new house mates are good. No one stands out, sorry wonderful people.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2018:

Think about it tomorrow. It’s a good motto.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
“Remember me, though I have to say goodbye, remember me, don’t let it make me cry. Even though you’re far away, I’ll hold you in my heart, I’ll sing a secret song to you each night we are apart. Know that I’m with you the only way that I can be, and till you’re in my arms again, remember me!"
